Analysis of 'Fireworks' By Katy Perry

Analysis of 'Fireworks' By Katy Perry

Laura Mulvey, a female feminist film theorist can be most applied to the music video, 'Fireworks' By the artist Katy Perry as there are many instances where the passive female characters are presented for visual pleasure and male gaze. The music video is created for a patriarchal dominating society, where there main audience is for men. For example there is a long shot of Katy Perry standing on a balcony. The Mise en scene of the woman with her white dress presents her as vulnerable and passive, waiting for a man to protect her. This links into the theory as that particular shot and Mise en scene was chosen for a male audience as they would be able to protect her. Another example where the male gaze theory can be applied is a long shot of some women characters jumping into a swimming pool. The women are wearing bikinis and this choice of Mise en scene is to stimulate a male audience, and is placed for the physical attraction and sexual desire which males have for the women. A final example where Mulvey's theory can be applied is where there is a Medium shot of Katy Perry, in a profile stance, shooting fireworks from her busts, which has connotations of sexual pleasure and excitement. This will be entertaining for a male audience and was created and shot for a purely male audience.
